Sound familiar?

Two sets of books, two different years.

A limited company gives you more choices, and more figures to keep straight.

Years that don't line up

Your company's year ends on its accounting reference date. Your own tax year ends on 5 April. Your spreadsheet only knows one of them.

How much to leave in the company

Corporation tax is due nine months and a day after the period ends. Spend it as dividends first and the bill still comes.

Salary or dividends?

Employer NI, the dividend allowance, and bands that depend on everything else you earn. Every choice moves the others.

Invoices with the right details

A company's invoices need its registered name and number, where it's registered and its registered office. A Word template forgets.

Expenses that work differently

Indemnity and fees the company pays for you, and the mileage it reimburses you, don't count the way a sole trader's do.

Pharmacies that pay late

Your company's cash flow depends on pharmacies paying on time, and nobody's tracking who hasn't.

Company invoices

Invoices from your company, done properly.

Look your company up by its number, and every invoice from then on comes from it, with the details the law asks for.

  • Filled in from Companies House. Enter your company number and its registered name, office, incorporation date and accounting reference date are filled in for you.
  • The details invoices need. Your company's registered name and number, where it's registered and its registered office, with your own name as the locum who did the work.
  • A trading name, too. Trade under a name of your own, as a company or a sole trader, and invoices show it.
  • Past invoices stay as they were. Change your trading name or switch from sole trader, and invoices you already sent keep the details they went out with.

Company and personal

Know what's the company's, and what's yours.

Switch the Earnings screen between your company and yourself. Each is worked out by the right year, from the same shifts.

  • Corporation tax by accounting period. Profit and corporation tax for each period, with marginal relief, a long first period split in two, and the date it's due.
  • Salary and dividends, planned. A suggested salary for a sole director, the dividends your profits could pay, and what each would cost you in personal tax.
  • Take-home by tax year. Your Income Tax, National Insurance and dividend tax by tax year, and what reaches your own account.
  • A warning before you overdraw. Dividends can't come from profits the company doesn't have. Locumoid warns you before you declare more than it's made.
  • Reports for your accountant. Export the company's period or your personal tax year as a PDF.

Figures are estimates to help you plan, not tax advice.

Questions, answered.

Does Locumoid file my company accounts or tax returns?

No. It gives you figures, not filings: the company's income, expenses, profit and corporation tax by accounting period, and your personal tax on salary and dividends by tax year. Your accountant, or your own software, still files with Companies House and HMRC, and the PDF reports give them everything in one place.

Does it tell me whether I am inside IR35?

No. Off-payroll status is decided by the pharmacy or agency for each engagement, and locum engagements differ too much for an app to judge. Locumoid keeps your invoices and figures straight whatever the answer.

I am switching from sole trader to a limited company. What happens to my figures?

Tell Locumoid when the company started. Shifts before then stay in your sole trader figures for the tax year, shifts after it go to the company, and invoices from that date come from the company with its registered details.

How is corporation tax worked out?

By your company's accounting period, from its accounting reference date at Companies House, at the small profits rate, the main rate, or with marginal relief in between, split across financial years where the rates differ. Limits are shared if you have associated companies and pro-rated for a short period.

Is it tax advice?

No. The figures are estimates to help you plan, using current UK rates and allowances. Check your salary, dividends and company tax with your accountant.
